The mission of Austin Zoo is to assist animals in need through rescue, conservation and education. We currently have over 300 animals, representing more than 100 different species. Our animal collection includes animals from other facilities that are being retired due to age, health or other issues; animals that were seized in animal cruelty cases; retired laboratory research animals and rehomed exotic pets.
Austin Zoo is a private, non-profit zoo and as such, we do not receive any funding from the city or state. Your purchases enable us to continue to care for the animals we have, and to be able to take in new animals that need a safe home. Please remember to indicate 'Austin Zoo' as the beneficiary of your donation at check-out.

The Capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) is a giant rodent native to South America - the largest living rodent in the world. Their scientific name comes from the Greek hydro (water) and choiros (pig). Though not a ‘pig’ - the capybara is related to guinea pigs. They can weigh more than 100 lbs and grow to be 4 feet long - much larger than their guinea pig relatives! Capybaras can reach speeds of up to 21 mph and are equally capable in the water. Capybaras have partially webbed feet, which help propel them through the water. Like a hippo, the capybara’s eyes, nose, and ears are located on the top of their heads, allowing them to peek above the surface for a breath of air or to check for predators. When threatened, capybaras will jump into the water and hide beneath the surface and can hold their breath for almost five minutes!
