African Lions (Panthera leo) once ranged across the African continent and into Syria, Israel, Iraq, Pakistan, Iran, and even northwest India. Lions have sadly declined to as few as 20,000 animals from about 450,000 just 50 years ago. Conservationists estimate that unless the current decline is checked, the number of lions will continue to drop significantly. Lions are listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as ‘Vulnerable.’ Learn more about lions at: https://nationalzoo.si.edu/animals/lion

Known throughout the world for its beautiful fur and elusive behavior, the endangered Snow Leopard (Panthera uncia) is found in the rugged mountains of Central Asia. Snow Leopards are perfectly adapted to the cold, barren landscape of their high-altitude home, but human threats have created an uncertain future for the cats. Despite a range of over 124,000 miles (2 million km), scientists estimate that there may only be up to 6,390 Snow Leopards left in the wild.(Snow Leopard Trust, 2020, https://www.snowleopard.org/snow-leopard-facts/)
